Where ChatGPT breaks down for repeated lecture workflows
The trouble starts when you try to use ChatGPT as your weekly system for processing lectures.
Context limits on long transcripts. A two hour lecture transcribed at typical speaking speed is 15,000 to 25,000 words. That's a lot to fit into a single conversation, and even modern ChatGPT models start to lose detail near the end. You paste the transcript, ask for detailed notes, and the response trails off before covering the last 30 minutes of class.
Re-explaining the format every session. You figure out a good prompt in week one. "Read this transcript and produce structured notes with bold headings, bullet point key concepts, definitions of all medical terms, and three practice questions per section." Then you do it again in week two and have to type or paste the same instructions. Week three, week four, week fifteen. Most students give up on the format consistency by week six.
Single output per request. Want a summary, detailed notes, flashcards, an MCQ quiz, short answer questions, and long answer questions from the same lecture? That's six separate prompts. Six separate context loads. Six chances for the AI to drift away from your intended format.

No grounding in slides or course materials. When a lecture references "the slide on the renin-angiotensin system," ChatGPT doesn't have that slide. You have to paste in the slide text separately, ask it to reconcile the two, and hope the model holds the context.

When ChatGPT is still the right choice
A few situations where ChatGPT (or Claude, or any general AI chat tool) is still the better pick.
